In less than a year, Baker Mayfield has bounced back and forth in the National Football League. The former #1 overall pick and 2017 Heisman Trophy winner has signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After Tom Brady retired once again, the Bucs were in need of a quarterback and it looks like they've potentially got their guy.
In July of last year, Mayfield was traded to the Carolina Panthers. He would start six games for the Panthers before he was released. The LA Rams picked up Mayfield after Matthew Stafford went down with an injury. Mayfield finished 2-8 last season and is looking for a chance of redemption. Things haven't been going too well for Mayfield ever since he's spectacular 2020 season. Now that he's signed with Tampa, he has a much-needed fresh start.
There's no guarantee for Mayfield at this point. All he has at this point is an opportunity. An opportunity to earn the starting job for Tampa Bay. At 27 years old, Mayfield looks as if he's still got plenty to offer. He still has a lot of potential but he needs to prove himself.
With the New Orleans striking gold with the signing of Derek Carr, the Bucs are facing competition within their division. With Carolina having the first overall pick, who knows what will happen. All of a sudden, it seems the NFC South is a very interesting division!
