A lot of football fans voiced their displeasure with Super Bowl LIX. And fair enough. There were two teams with both passionate fan bases and equally vocal critics. However, the calls to boycott the final game of the year were always going to be too much. The final game of the year is a must-watch. Furthermore, even with two teams whose deservingness has been questioned, the two sides in question gave a good final matchup for the 2024-2025 season.
At the end of the day, the last team standing is crowned champion. The City of Brotherly Love gets to celebrate, and it's likely that they will for a while. But the game itself did not go the way too many people thought it would.
For a team in Kansas City that had the chance of making history, they seemed ill-prepared for the moment. The focus can be on what the Chiefs did wrong; however, credit has to be given to Vic Fangio's side of the ball.
People enjoy a good hate-watch, and the Philly defense made life a living hell for Patrick Mahomes. At times it looked like the defense would be able to keep KC from even crossing midfield. Also, instead of completing a three-peat, spectators saw the QB feel uncomfortable throughout the game.
Furthermore, this turned out to be a fun game to watch despite arguably the best player in Saquon Barkley being limited. The Kansas City defense stepped up throughout the game and forced Philadelphia to become more one-dimensional than they would have liked.
Anomalies in Super Bowl LIX
However, the difference proved to be the mistakes by Mahomes that led to either short drives or outright turnovers. The early sequence of events, particularly the Cooper DeJean pick-six, allowed Super Bowl LIX to be played on Philly's terms. Although KC tried to make a game of it late, it needs to be acknowledged that the final score could have easily been a lot worse if it weren't for fourth-quarter garbage time points.
The Eagles pulled off one of the more dominant performances in New Orleans. And this is the case with the run game being held in check and the leading receiver not even eclipsing 70 yards. However, their ability to lead from in front through their defense made Super Bowl LIX one of the more interesting watches, despite a lot of the fan noise coming into the game.
