The Los Angeles Rams were big winners coming out of Week 16 in the NFL. The Rams got a win over the New York Jets 19-9 on Sunday. Kyren Williams led the offense with 122 yards rushing on 23 carries and a touchdown.
The defense stepped up huge. Hold the New York Jets' talented offense to only nine points. The defense allowed no points in the second half of the game. Aaron Rodgers had 256 passing yards and a 11-yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams for the first score of the game. The Kyren Williams was the response by the Rams for a 6-6 tie. The Jets added a 21-yard field goal to end the first half and lead 9-6 at the break.
The Rams would outscore the Jets 10-0 in the second. Matthew Stafford didn't have his typical passing game, only passing for 110 yards with an interception and a touchdown. That touchdown pass from Stafford going to returning tight end Tyler Higbee. Higbee made his long-awaited return to the team from ACL injury suffered back in January in the Wildcard Round against the Detroit Lions. A special moment for Higbee on the field and off the field as coach Sean McVay gifted Higbee the game ball after the win.
The Rams win over the Jets could be considered a mental win as well as the Cali team flew out East to New Jersey in 28-degree weather and outcoming unfavorable conditions. So, you can say the Rams won twice in one game, the New York Jets and the weather.
Now, what makes the Rams big winners coming out of Week 16? The rest of the NFC West division all lost. The San Fransico 49ers lost down in the Miami against the Dolphins thus eliminating them from the postseason. The Arizona Cardinals suffered a loss in Carolina against the Panthers in overtime thus eliminating them from the postseason as well.
And then, there's the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks hosted the Minnesota Vikings, sitting right behind the Rams in the NFC West race. The Vikings in a similar fighting with the Detroit Lions in the NFC North and possibly the No. 1 seed in the NFC. Geno Smith and the Seahawks took the lead late in the fourth quarter at 24-20 with under five minutes left. Sam Darnold and the Vikings would respond as Darnold connected with Justin Jefferson for a touchdown. The Vikings pick Smith off late thus the Vikings win 27-24 over the Seahawks.
The Vikings tie with the Lions atop the NFC North race and the Rams get a full game ahead of the Seahawks with two games to play. The Rams came out of Week 16 as big winners if the biggest winners in the NFL.
Now the Seahawks have to travel to Chicago on a short week to the Bears on Thursday night in a must win. A lost on Thursday night by the Seahawks would set the Rams up for clinching purposes on Saturday against the eliminated Cardinals. A win by the Seahawks would a set-up a potential winner-take-all Week 18 matchup in Los Angeles in Week 18.
