This year's Super Bowl is being interrupted by the New Orleans Saints. Yes, they're hosting the championship. But the headlines took their attention away from the game itself. A lot of coaching changes happen before the NFL season ends. However, the best teams usually go the furthest in the playoffs and consequently have the most appealing candidates for others to poach.
Unfortunately, the rules limit the ability of coordinators to get serious consideration. It's known that front offices will still find workarounds. Handshake deals often lead to staffs unofficially being built behind the scenes. This appears to be the case for the host city's team.
Adam Schefter reported last Saturday evening about the New Orleans Saints' latest hire-to-be. According to the post on X, Kellen Moore is set to become the next head coach. The offensive coordinator has been preparing for this next step in his post-playing journey.
He's filled the OC role for three teams before taking the promotion. The Chargers, Cowboys, and Eagles saw him on the sidelines. The former Dallas QB has been in an NFL coaching role since 2018. His stints have seen varying degrees of success. But his arguably best job has been in Arlington, Texas.
The offense looked above average with the coach Moore and Dak Prescott combo. Since he left for Philadelphia, the Dallas offense has looked pedestrian at best. But the former Boise State player faces a new challenge.
What to expect with the New Orleans Saints
Firstly, the team doesn't have a franchise quarterback. Derek Carr is serviceable, but the future will need someone else under center. He's someone who has also seen varying levels of success in the league. Either way, at this point, it's not likely that he will play at or even close to a top-10 level moving forward.
The franchise may elect to stick with him for now. But they'll certainly need to find a replacement starter sooner or later. Until that's official, much like the hire itself, coach Moore's first task will be to get the best out of Carr.
Some rumors indicate that a reunion with Davante Adams is in the cards. But until then, the organization will need to make do with one of the more limited offensive rooms in the league. Everyone recognizes that this roster isn't in a position to win. But even then, if games look bad, calls for the franchise to move on will ring throughout the Superdome.
Officially unofficial, coach Moore will have a lot of work to do in 'The Big Easy.' It will start with the draft and having a good free agency. But even then, a lot will need to go right. Luckily, the New Orleans Saints are in the NFC South. A playoff trip is always closer in this division than most.
