FC Dallas' first home game of the season ended negatively. Numerous missed scoring chances caused a late-game collapse, with three goals conceded after the 80-minute mark. This is FC Dallas' first loss of the season, and after three games, the club is not off to a good start.
In front of a sell-out crowd, FC Dallas was heavily relentless on the attack with no intention of slowing down. Early on, they did have a goal nullified due to offside, but based on their ability to maintain control of the ball and being well-organized on the attack, FC Dallas had some momentum going.
In the 57th minute, Logan Farrington scored his first goal of the season to put FC Dallas ahead. The goal came specifically due to a massive blunder by Chicago's goalie. Unfortunately, FC Dallas' inability to add to their lead ultimately came back to haunt them.
"We got a little complacent," Farrington said after the game. "There were a couple of mistakes leading up to the goal that were very preventable—things we can work on moving forward."
In the 82nd minute, Chicago equalized only to make it 2-1 in their favor two minutes later, after FC Dallas goalie Maarten Paes failed to secure the ball after initially making a save. A few minutes later, Chicago made it 3-1 via a penalty and that was it. FC Dallas was awarded a penalty near the end, but the damage had been done. The penalty would ultimately not be converted. No doubt, a rough night for FC Dallas.
"This is my responsibility, " FC Dallas Head Coach Eric Quill said after the game. "I’ve been entrusted with leading this club on a mission. As coaches, we impact the game through our decisions, and this one was on me. The game was under control. I can make better decisions, and I’ll leave it at that."
As a result of this loss, FC drops has dropped significantly in the MLS Western Conference standings. This weekend, FC Dallas will host Vancouver. They can't afford to be 0-2 to start the season in home games. Vancouver is 3-0 on top of the MLS Western Conference standings.
"We are going to be extremely motivated—really motivated," Paes said regarding this weekend's game. "They have a lot of talented individuals, but they’re also a well-organized team. We need to be ready and match their intensity."
This Saturday's game kicks off at 7:30 Central Time.
