Mike McCarthy is not returning as Head Coach for the Dallas Cowboys

By Alex Al-Kazzaz

Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys have failed to reach an agreement for a new contract. Therefore, McCarthy and the Cowboys have parted ways. Considering all the time Dallas wasted between now and last Monday, the Cowboys are already off to a bad start this off-season. By the end of the week, Mike McCarthy will almost certainly have a job.

Dallas finished the season with a 7-10 record, their first losing season since 2020. The injuries played a massive role in Dallas' dismal season. From 2021-2023, the team went 12-5 only to crash in the playoffs, twice in the wildcard round. McCarthy came into the 2024 season on the hot seat. The decision to move on from him should have been made immediately.

The search for a new head coach is now underway. Some names stand out, but perhaps the best candidate that could have been brought in is no longer available; Mike Vrabel. Lions OC Ben Johnson is reportedly a candidate for the Dallas HC vacancy. Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury and former Cowboys OC Kellen Moore are also linked to the vacancy, as well. Many are linked to the position, but Dallas needs to interview multiple candidates and weigh out all their options.

Could Moore return to Dallas? It's possible, but would he interview and take the job if Dallas were to offer it to him? He was fired a few years ago by Dallas. Moore's aware of the philosophies of the organization, so maybe Moore becoming the next head coach would be good for both him and the Cowboys.

At the moment, it's unknown who's scheduled to interview for the job, but it's possible that a decision could be made possibly next week.
