The Ohio State University are still celebrating their seventh National Championship in football one week later. The eighth-seeded Buckeyes take claim to the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoffs in dominating fashion. Reminisce of the 2012 run where Urban Myers led the Buckeyes to their sixth title in the first four-team College Football Playoffs.
Unlike Myers in 2012, Ryan Day went into the first 12-team playoffs under immense of pressure unlike any other coach in Buckeye history. Day came into the season with a $20 million roster. A year after Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines won the final four-team playoffs. The prohibitive favorites to win the Big Ten and the National Championship.
Then a loss to 1. Oregon happened after QB Will Howard mistakenly ran out the clock down one point. The first loss of the season in Eugene, Oregon. Then, the inexcusable loss to Michigan in the Horseshoe. Out physical, outmatched to a Michigan team who only won six games at the time. No Jim Harbaugh on the sideline because he's coaching the Los Angeles Chargers. A Michigan team that could only run the football. A loss that that was catastrophic that had Buckeye Nation turn on Ryan Day. A fourth consecutive lost to the up North had Buckeye Nation in turmoil.
No Big Ten Championship appearance due to the loss to Michigan. Oregon and Penn State battled for it. Oregon winning the Big Ten in their inaugural season.
For two weeks, Ryan Day and the Buckeyes heard from the media and fans talk about Day needs to be fired. He never done anything noteworthy since becoming the coach as Ohio State. He can't beat Michigan. He can't win the Big Ten. Never appeared in the National Championship. Ryan Day needs to go.
One month later, Ryan Day is now a National Champion Coach at The Ohio State University. One of the most dominated runs in the College Football Playoffs. Embarrassing the Tennessee Volunteers in the opening round at the Horseshoe 42-17. Dominated the lone unbeaten team in college football, the Oregon Ducks in the Rose Bowl 41-21. Jack Sawyer ceiling the Cotton Bowl win over fifth seed Texas 28-14 on a stripped sack, fumble return for a Scoop-N-Score. Then, a very controlled game against seventh seed Notre Dame, with Will Howard connecting with Jeremiah Smith on 3rd and 11 for 56 yards to ice the National Championship 34-23.
You may not be impressed that a $20 million roster actually won the National Championship once it was all said and done. Maybe you were looking forward to Ohio State to go in another direction from Ryan Day. Whatever the case maybe, it's no more now because like it or not, Ryan Day is a champion, and you can't erase that.
