Last weekend, France triumphed on home soil. With a 28-7 win over Fiji, the French National Rugby Seven team earned the gold. Aside from football, rugby is a popular sport in France. Believe it or not, some regions in France favor rugby over football. Achieving this endeavor was a historic moment for the French Republic, especially with how France played and advanced to earn the gold. The best part? Fiji had won the gold in the last two Olympic games in the rugby sevens and had NEVER lost a match.
France did not top their group, finishing with one win, one loss, and one draw. After starting with a 12-12 draw against the United States, France beat Uruguay but lost to Fiji in the final group game. While their run in the group stage was not the best, it was good enough for the team to qualify for a spot in the medal playoff/knockout stage.
Both teams faced challenges en route to the final. Fiji knocked off Ireland in a well-fought match before easily beating Australia in the semifinals. France eliminated Argentina before getting a remarkable win over South Africa in the semis. The competition of this knockout stage was entertaining and the level of talent from all competitors can't be overlooked.
In the final, Fiji wasted no time in taking the lead. With the way Fiji scored that first try, it looked as though it was going to be a long day for the French and that Fiji was well on their way to winning the gold for a third time. France responded brilliantly and it was tied at the half. In the second half, France immediately gained the lead thanks primarily to Antoine Dupont who had a vital role in France's triumph. Once France took control in the second half, Fiji had no response and France took advantage.
