Amid the concerns involving veteran guard Zack Martin and his contract, the Dallas Cowboys have given CB Trevon Diggs his payday. An exciting way for the team to kick off their 2023 training camp. Dallas started training camp yesterday and is preparing for what looks to be a make-or-break season for the team.
Dallas selected Diggs in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama. His eleven interceptions from 2021 speak for themselves. While he only had three interceptions last year, he did register a career-high 59 combined tackles. Diggs's coverage skills are somewhat of a concern, however, he has solidified himself as a fan favorite. He has secured his foreseeable future with Dallas with a five-year extension worth $97 million.
Now that Diggs has been paid, Cowboys fans will soon wonder about the future of the likes of CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons. For now, the status of Martin is the biggest story as he has not reported to training camp as he is unhappy with his current deal. Martin has two years left on the deal that he signed back in 2018. The 32-year-old veteran guard is an eight-time Pro Bowler. Many feel that Dallas should have worked out his deal before Diggs, which is arguable. He has done a great service for Dallas since he arrived back in 2014. So the front office needs to resolve the issues as quickly as possible.
Dallas arguably has one of the best defenses in the league. Last season, the defense was able to bail out the offense on countless occasions. There's plenty of talent on that defense, and there are heavy expectations for them. For Diggs, now that he's got his massive contract, he's definitely under pressure. Regardless, now that he's being paid well, he needs to give the team what they've paid for.
